Hunt Slonem

Hunt Slonem wurde 1951 in Kittery, Maine geboren. Nachdem er sein Studium an der Tulane University of Louisiana mit dem Bachelor of Arts abgeschlossen hatte, studierte er Malerei an der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in New York. Zahlreiche Stipendien, unter anderem das National Endowment for the Arts Grant in Painting (1991), wurden ihm verliehen.

Mit seinen Arbeiten ist er weltweit in zahlreichen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten. Sicherlich ist Hunt Slonem mittlerweile eine der schillerndsten und spannendsten Figuren der New Yorker Kunstszene. Besonders in der amerikanischen Film- und Musikbranche finden sich viele berühmte Persönlichkeiten, die seine phantasievolle und expressive Kunst für sich entdeckt haben.

Seine Werke waren bereits in zahlreichen internationalen Einzelausstellungen zu sehen. In den USA wird der New Yorker Maler exklusiv von der berühmten Marlborough Gallery vertreten. Und auch an wichtigen Kunst-Projekten wie „Art in Embassies“ hat Hunt Slonem bereits erfolgreich mitgewirkt. Über fünfzig Museen weltweit beherbergen seine Bilder in ihren Sammlungen, unter ihnen das Metropolitan Museum of Art, das Whitney Museum, das Guggenheim Museum und das New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. Zudem ist er in Sammlungen, wie der American Telephone and Telegraph, Chase Manhattan Bank, Citibank,

Continental Airlines, Goldman Sachs & Co., IBM Corporation, Marriot Corporation, Paine Webber Inc. und Readers Digest Inc. vertreten.

Ausgehend von der Faszination für Exotica, die Hunt Slonem während seiner Kindheit auf Hawaii und eines Aufenthaltes als Austauschstudent in Managua, Nicaragua entdeckte, pflegt der Künstler seit 1973 inmitten der Metropole New York die Beschäftigung mit der tropischen Flora und Fauna. In seinen farbgewaltigen Werken finden sich Vögel, Schmetterlinge oder Blüten in serieller Reihung. Besonders die verschiedenen Vogelarten erscheinen als immer wiederkehrendes Hauptmotiv, als Sinnbilder einer Spiritualität, die sich schon im Frühwerk des Künstlers wiederfindet.

Es entstehen figurative Bilder auf strukturierten Hintergründen, die an Tapetenmuster erinnern. Mit leuchtender Farbigkeit vereinen sich hier Expression und Gegenständlichkeit.
