Don Nice

Don Nice wurde 1932 in Visalia, Kalifornien geboren. Bereits 1946, mit nur 14 Jahren, eröffnete er seine erste Einzelausstellung. Sein Studium der Malerei absolvierte er an der University of Southern California und an der Yale University, die er 1964 mit einem Master of Fine Arts verließ. 2019 verstarb der Künstler.

Seine wichtigste Inspiration erhielt er durch seinen Lehrer Alex Katz. Zuvor wurde sein künstlerisches Schaffen bereits durch Aufenthalte in Florenz, Paris und Österreich nachhaltig geprägt. 1958 besuchte er die Internationale Sommerakademie, die in diesem Jahr von Oskar Kokoschka geleitet wurde und dessen Werk Don Nice seither als eine der einflussreichsten Inspirationen für sein künstlerisches Schaffen bezeichnet.

Seit den 1960er Jahren hat sich Don Nice als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Neuen Realisten und der Popart international etabliert. Mit seinem besonderen Fokus auf den Realismus brachte er neue inhaltliche Aussagen in die Malerei. Neben der amerikanischen (Pop-) Kultur nimmt er in seinen Arbeiten Bezug auf kritische und aktuelle Themen.

Amerikanische Produkte und Alltagsgegenstände, wie Sneakers, Cola- Flaschen oder Zigarettenschachteln, dienen seiner Malerei ebenso als Bildmotive wie die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt, die sowohl einzeln als auch in themenübergreifenden Kombinationen in seinen

Bildwelten aufeinandertreffen. Immer wieder gelingt es ihm aufs Neue das Zusammenspiel zwischen Natur, Produkt und Konsum in seiner Kunst zu visualisieren. Seine besondere Faszination gilt dabei dem „Dingsein“ der „Dinge“, insbesondere der Verdeutlichung der scheinbar unbedeutenden oder alltäglichen Gegenstände, die wichtige Ideen und Traditionen der amerikanischen Kultur in sich verbergen.

Seine Werke waren bereits in zahlreichen Einzelausstellungen zu sehen und sind international in wichtigen privaten wie öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten. Neben vielen weiteren sind hier besonders die drei großen und einflussreichen musealen Sammlungen des Metropolitan Museum of Art, des Whitney Museum of American Art sowie des Museum of Modern Art in New York zu nennen. Erst kürzlich wurde eines seiner Werke weit über dem Schätzpreis durch das Internationale Auktionshaus Christie’s in New York versteigert.
